How to find hidden photos on Android.
Hidden photos are almost always in one of a few places: a hidden album in your Gallery app, Locked Folder or Archive in Google Photos, Samsung's Secure Folder, Android's Private space, or a folder Gallery skips. Here's where each one is and how to bring photos back.

To find hidden photos on Android, start with the app you hid them in. In Samsung’s Gallery, tap Albums, then View all, open the three-dot menu and tap Hide albums. On a Xiaomi or Redmi phone, open Gallery, tap the three-dot icon, then Settings and View hidden albums, or swipe down on the Albums screen for the Private album. In Google Photos, tap Collections, then Locked or Archive. If none of those has them, check Secure Folder, Private space, Files by Google’s Safe folder, and folders that Gallery skips because of a .nomedia file.

Hidden albums in Samsung Gallery
Samsung’s Gallery can take whole albums off the screen without moving or locking anything.
- Open Gallery and tap Albums.
- Tap View all.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then Hide albums.
- Switch off the albums you want to see again.
Samsung’s own pages name the menu differently (Menu on the Australian page, More options on the US page), so your screen may not match exactly. Hiding an album doesn’t need a PIN, so anyone with your unlocked phone can do the same.
Hidden albums and the Private album on Xiaomi and Redmi
Xiaomi’s Gallery has two separate places, and photos can be in either one.
Hidden albums. Xiaomi’s steps for the Xiaomi 14T:
- Open Gallery.
- Tap the three-dot icon at the top right.
- Tap Settings, then View hidden albums.
- Tap Unhide, then OK.
Private album. Open Gallery, tap Albums, then swipe down on the album screen and enter your privacy protection password. Xiaomi sets that password in Settings > Fingerprints, face data, and screen lock > Privacy protection password. If you’ve never set one, Xiaomi says you’ll be asked to set it the first time you open the Private album.
Xiaomi writes these FAQs per model, so the names can differ on older phones.
Locked Folder and Archive in Google Photos
Google Photos has two places that hide photos from the main Photos view, and they work very differently.
Locked Folder. Tap Collections, then Locked, and unlock with your screen lock. Google says the Locked Folder password is the same as your device screen lock. Photos in it don’t show up in search, albums, shared items or memories, and other apps can’t see them. That’s why they seem to vanish.
If you’re looking on a different phone, Locked Folder only shows photos that were backed up. Google says items you don’t back up are stored only on the phone that moved them, and are lost if you uninstall Google Photos, clear its data, or reset that phone. So don’t reset or reinstall to “fix” a missing Locked Folder.
Archive. Tap Collections, then Archive. To bring a photo back, select it, tap More, then Unarchive. Archive only tidies the main view: Google says archived photos still appear in albums, search results and the folders on your device. If you can find a photo by searching but not by scrolling, it’s probably archived.
For more, see the Google Photos Locked Folder guide.
Samsung Secure Folder, when the icon is gone
If photos were moved into Secure Folder, they leave Gallery and only show up inside it. The icon itself can be hidden, which is often why people can’t find it.
- Open Settings, tap Security and privacy, then More security settings.
- Tap Secure Folder and unlock it.
- To get the icon back, turn on Add Secure Folder to Apps screen.
Samsung also lists a Secure Folder tile in Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers) that hides or shows the app. To take a photo out, open My Files inside Secure Folder, touch and hold it, tap More, then Move out of Secure Folder.
If you can’t remember the lock, read forgot your Secure Folder password? before you try anything else. Samsung says that without Reset with Samsung account, a forgotten passcode means you can’t get in.
Android Private space (Android 15 and later)
Private space hides a whole set of apps and files behind a second lock, on phones with Android 15 or later whose maker supports it.
- Scroll to the bottom of All Apps and tap Private space, or go to Settings > Security & privacy > Private space, then unlock.
- If the space is set to Hide private space when it’s locked, it doesn’t appear in All Apps. Google’s page says a search can show “Private space: Tap to set up or open” whether or not one exists, so others can’t tell.
- Files copied or moved into the space go to the Downloads folder in its own storage. Open them from apps inside the space.
Google says there’s no recovery for a forgotten Private space lock. Reset private space in Settings deletes the space, its apps and their data, so treat it as a last step, not a way in.
Files by Google Safe folder
Open Files by Google, scroll to Collections, tap Safe folder and enter your PIN or pattern. Google says files in it don’t appear in search results or categories, and other apps can’t open them. To take one out, press and hold it, then choose Move out of Safe folder. It goes back to where it came from.
If you’ve forgotten the PIN or pattern, Google says you can’t get to the files. Resetting the Safe folder permanently deletes them, so don’t reset unless you’re ready to lose what’s inside.
Folders hidden with .nomedia
A file named .nomedia in a folder stops Gallery from scanning it, so the photos stay on the phone but never appear in Gallery. On a Samsung phone:
- Open My Files, tap the three-dot More options, then Settings.
- Turn on Show hidden system files.
- Open the photo folder. If you see
.nomedia, touch and hold it and tap Delete.
Delete only the file named .nomedia, never the folder or the photos around it. Samsung’s pages also list a few other reasons photos skip Gallery: the files are marked hidden in My Files, Gallery’s Photos and videos permission is limited, or the images sit in a folder Gallery doesn’t recognize.
Still missing? Check Trash and the account
- Gallery Trash. In Samsung Gallery, open Menu, then Trash, and tap Restore. Samsung says items there are permanently deleted after 30 days.
- Google Photos Trash. Google’s lost-photos page says deleted photos stay in Trash for 30 days.
- The wrong account. Google says photos can seem to disappear when you’re signed in to a different Google Account.
- Folders from other apps. In Google Photos, tap Collections, then On this device. Photos saved by chat and social apps often live there.
- Grouped photos. Samsung Gallery can stack similar shots. Samsung’s fix is to turn off grouping with the icon next to search.
Can someone else find photos I hid?
It depends on where they are. Hidden albums, Archive and .nomedia have no lock at all: anyone holding your unlocked phone can use the same steps above. Locked Folder opens with your screen lock, so anyone who knows your PIN can open it. Secure Folder, Private space, Safe folder and Xiaomi’s Private album can each have a lock of their own. For the trade-offs between them, see how to hide photos on Android.
Questions
Where is the hidden album on Android?
It depends on the Gallery app. On Samsung it’s Albums > View all > three-dot menu > Hide albums. On Xiaomi it’s Gallery > three-dot icon > Settings > View hidden albums. Google Photos has no hidden album, but Collections holds Locked and Archive.
How do I find the private album in Gallery?
On Xiaomi and Redmi phones, open Gallery, tap Albums, swipe down on the album screen, and enter your privacy protection password.
How do I find hidden photos on a Samsung phone?
Check Hide albums in Gallery first, then Secure Folder through Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings, then Locked Folder in Google Photos. If a whole folder is missing, look for a .nomedia file in My Files.
Why can I search for a photo but not see it in Google Photos?
It’s probably archived. Archived photos leave the main view but still show up in search and albums. Open Collections > Archive and tap Unarchive.
